The Kelpie Dreamers
The majority of the week consisted of allowing people to test out the “Ootcuts”. Seeing their reactions, creativity and uptake of the product really presented the addictive nature of the pieces themselves. It was also a chance to take opinion and understand it from a non-designer aspect, with the “Ootcuts” being as interpretable as they are. Creating a backstory for the product to aid the testing was beneficial for the uptake of the idea. Trying to show the transition from being picked from the Kelpies skin to being in your hands, then going to create. From the discussions and product tests, I tried out other ways the “fusion points” could be presented, and how the Ootcuts themselves could be brought to life. After further chats, it seems the better option to keep the Ootcut shapes simple and the magnets unseen, providing a positive confusion, instead of a quick realisation, finding out how to use yourself. Moving forward, it seems best to try and search for materials and a suitable production method and searching for potential manufacturers. Also refining the backstory, this will hopefully create further understanding as to where the Ootcuts come from, whether that be presented visually or written, which provides a positive link to the packaging.
Last week I felt the graphics took the approach of promoting The Kelpies as a whole and what they stood for, taking a step back I investigated more on what the product stands for and how the backstory can help create meaning to the customer. Developing logo ideas that use negative space to create an interesting and abstract take. I feel the logos do bring a modern vision to the brand however I feel there needs further development to communicate what the brand stands for, so it is clearer to the customer. I then looked at creating a packaging mock-up that follows a vintage construction style. I feel the illustrations worked in harmony with the textured background and gave a rustic feel to the packaging, when finding out different opinions on the whole packaging I discovered that the typography gave the packaging a western feel. I later developed the packaging further to see how it would look like a simplified jute pull bag. I looked at logo placement within the wooden pieces and how it would look embossed. From feedback, I would like to develop the packaging concept making it easier for the viewer to understand the backstory.
